10 Mar 1968, Khe Sanh, South Vietnam --- French Defeat Recalled. Khe Sanh, South Vietnam: The siege of the Marine fortress at Khe Sanh (bottom) recalls the similar position of the French Army at Dien Bien Phu in 1954 (top, in photo from files), when Communist Viet Minh forces scored the decisive victory of the French Indochina War. There are similarities in terrain and methods of siege, and the same man -- Gen. Vo Nguyen Giap -- is directing the Communist forces. Some observers see additional significance in the fact that the 14th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu attack, March 13th, is rapidly approaching.
