The last contingent of Khe Sanh-based Marines prepares to board trucks for evacuation from this bastion July 4th. The once busy landing strip in the background is now empty of aircraft. The Marines have now completely pulled out of this base, where nearly 200 men died and 1,500 were wounded in 77 days of Communist seige this spring.

Khe Sanh a Pilot's Nightmare. Khe Sanh, South Vietnam: Marines duck as a helicopter runs the gauntlet of enemy fire to land at Khe Sanh. Communist gunners open up every time a plane approaches Khe Sanh and the base itself is being constantly bombarded. A U.S. transport was shot down March 6th, killing all 49 men aboard. It was the third large transport lost to enemy fire, which also has claimed more than a half dozen helicopters

Khe Sanh, South Vietnam: The siege of the Marine fortress at Khe Sanh (bottom) recalls the similar position of the French Army at Dien Bien Phu in 1954 (top, in photo from files), when Communist Viet Minh forces scored the decisive victory of the French Indochina War. There are similarities in terrain and methods of siege, and the same man -- Gen. Vo Nguyen Giap -- is directing the Communist forces. Some observers see additional significance in the fact that the 14th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu attack, March 13th, is rapidly approaching.
